Archangel Antiques
Vintage Clothing, Accessories, Collectibles & Buttons
The Scene
Can't deal with the flea market? Head to East 9th Street for its mix of reasonably priced vintage stores, all run by folks a little kinder than the ones you'll find on 26th Street--and still willing to bargain, to boot. Archangel Antiques, two stores side-by-side packed with several desirables, is one stop that's a must.
The Goods
A few racks of clothing are populated with pieces from the '50s or
'60s, but Archangel's real trade is in accessories. Peruse trays and trays of eyewear, from rhinestone-adorned cat-eyes to Lennon-esque wire frames, as well as charms, cufflinks, costume jewelry, even tiaras. (Complete the set with a mini-tiara to pin on your lapel.) There's a good bit of smoking paraphernalia--pipes, lighters and cigarette cases--plus owners willing to give you a history lesson. Also look for bigger items like steel desk chairs and end tables.
Neo-Luddites will appreciate the typewriters that are often for sale.
Customer Reviews
Mooka Kinney designers Alison Lewis and Rachel Antonoff spin vintage-inspired frocks with girlish whimsy and colorful prints and patterns. They are also quintessential New York girls—finding inspiration in secondhand stores, speakeasy bars, and city gardens. Here, they spill their secret about a favorite vintage store:
“Archangel Antiques - the people who own it will talk to you and share their food with you. They have cases and cases of old lockets, jewelry, and buttons—some really rare and amazing pieces that you can get lost in for hours even though it’s quite small “
